GTA Closes Their “Monster of a Season” with Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein

(GAINESVILLE, Ga., Mar 27, 2025) Gainesville Theatre Alliance closes its 2024-25 “Monster of a Season” with the Broadway hit Young Frankenstein, running April 11-19 at the University of North Georgia’s Ed Cabell Theatre. Adapted by Mel Brooks from his own acclaimed 1974 film, this musical comedy offers a clever, irreverent take on the classic horror story.

From the creators of The Producers comes this monster musical comedy that follows Frederick Frankenstein—pronounced Fronk-en-steen—as he inherits his infamous grandfather’s estate in Transylvania. With the help of a loyal assistant and a curious lab partner, he sets out to continue the family legacy… with electrifying results.

Young Frankenstein is directed by GTA Artistic Director Zechariah Pierce, who also serves as Associate Director of UNG’s School of Communication, Film & Theatre. The production also features musical direction by guest artist Amy Duffy, co-founder of Destination Theatre, choreography by Ste Clough, and scenic design by Dennis C. Maulden, a GTA favorite. Rounding out the creative team are Associate Director Jacob Theo Squire, Assistant Choreographer Kylie Groom Stacy, Lighting Designer Matthew Sand, Sound Designer Zack Bennett, and Costume Designer Pamela Workman. The cast features students from University of North Georgia and Brenau University.

Pierce, whose background includes training and performance in clown work and physical comedy, sees Young Frankenstein as an ideal blend of theatrical and cinematic humor. “There’s a long-standing tradition of clown and physical comedy work in film and theatre alike,” he explains. “Mel Brooks happens to be one of the icons that has successfully navigated both mediums to great effect and acclaim. I can remember watching the 1974 Young Frankenstein with my dad. We laughed so hard we cried. The musical, to my estimation, is an even better medium for this story. The sheer ridiculousness of the jokes pairs perfectly with the heightened camp that only musical theatre can achieve.”

An opening night reception catered by Chef Joel’s Copa Cabana will be held in the Performing Arts building lobby after the April 11 performance. Tickets for Young Frankenstein can be purchased at GainesvilleTheatreAlliance.org or by calling the GTA Box Office at 678-717-3624. Due to some sexual innuendo and crass language, the show is recommended for ages 15 and up.
