Dr. Tracey Brent-Chessum is the Chair of Theatre at Brenau University and the BA Theatre Program Coordinator. She is an active director and coach, new work development consultant, and a specialist in American musical theatre history. She was the Artistic Director of Pallas Theatre Collective in Washington, D.C., developing new musicals to ensure the continuance of America’s musical theatre legacy until 2019 (Helen Hayes Award Nominee, John Aniello Award for Outstanding Emerging Theatre Company). In the past 10 years, she has been privileged to work with faculty and students in the theatre programs at the University of Maryland, Ball State University, Point Park University’s Conservatory of Performing Arts, and now at Gainesville Theatre Alliance. Chessum holds a Ph.D. in Theatre and Performance Studies from the University of Maryland, and her scholarship focuses on propaganda and nationalism in American musical theatre (with an emphasis on six “Salesmen of Americanism”: John Philip Sousa, George M. Cohan, Florenz Ziegfeld Jr., Oscar Hammerstein II, Stephen Sondheim, and Lin-Manuel Miranda).
